These orange pumpkin candy cups are vegan-friendly, kid-friendly and a great last minute Halloween DIY!
Fun fact: I’ve never carved a pumpkin before…. I know, right?
It’s one of those things that I always say I’m going to do but never end up actually doing. It’s partly because they are so expensive in October, but also because witnessing my cousin pull the smelly “guts” out of a pumpkin one year kind of turned me off at bit. Ok… a lot. So although I love how the end, carved out scary pumpkin faces look, it’s just not something I’m all that passionate about doing myself. An easier, less messy alternative? These cute little vegan orange pumpkin candy cups!
I’ve seen these pumpkin candy cups all over Pinterest over the years. So today I decided I’d try making them for myself because they look sooo damn cute! The concept is super simple- just peel an orange from the inside out, carve a face on it then add your filling. So, if you have any kids at home, this would be a great easy recipe to make with them.
For this recipe I used the new “naked” Skittles because I love the pastel colours! Even though they bring a “cute” vibe rather than super scary, I just love how well the colours contrast with the orange cup. But feel free to fill them with anything else that your heart desires. Here are some other vegan ideas:
- (vegan) Jelly
- Chopped fruit
- Jelly Tots
- Banana nice cream
These pumpkin candy cups make the perfect centrepiece for a Halloween party. They are super easy, cute AND they are a great alternative to messy pumpkin carving. Plus, eating the leftover orange pieces is waayyy tastier than eating the insides of a pumpkin (at least, in my sweet-toothed opinion).
I hope these pumpkin candy cups will help to spook up your Halloween! Enjoy.
Vegan Orange Pumpkin Candy Cups
An easy peasy take on traditional pumpkin carving- with oranges!
- A bag of oranges
- Skittles or other vegan candy/filling (ideas listed in the post above)
Cut the top off of each orange to make a "lid". Place the lid aside to dry a little.
Using a blunt knife (or your fingers), gently peel the orange segments inwards to remove them from the skin. Empty the inside completely, leaving the peel in tact.
Draw your "pumpkin" face onto the orange peel using a pen.
Using a knife or some small scissors, carve out the face.
Fill with candy or whatever your heart desires!
